IRENA publishes a new report on solar and wind investment opportunities in Angola
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has published a new report identifying and characterising priority areas in Angola for the development of large-scale solar photovoltaic and onshore wind projects, highlighting the country’s high potential for the expansion of these technologies.
The report combines detailed data on renewable resources, infrastructure, land use and environmental and social constraints, enabling the mapping of areas with the greatest technical and economic viability. The assessment includes indicators such as capacity factor, energy production, levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) and proximity to transmission grids and access routes, providing an integrated view of the conditions for investment. In this way, the total potential for the development of renewable energy projects in the country is highlighted, and priority zones are identified that could be considered in national energy planning, contributing to the expansion of installed capacity, the strengthening of the electricity grid and improved access to energy.
In addition to supporting the formulation of public policies, the results aim to reduce risks for investors by providing detailed and comparable technical and economic information, facilitating decision-making and promoting the mobilisation of finance for new projects.
This initiative forms part of IRENA’s support for long-term energy planning in Angola, contributing to the diversification of the energy mix, a reduction in dependence on fossil fuels, and the achievement of the goals of universal access to energy and climate change mitigation.
