'RENMOZ in Europe exemplifies how the Global Gateway/Team Europe approach can create tangible pathways for investment'

The RENMOZ in Europe business forum, held in Brussels on 17th and 18th March, marked a significant step forward in strengthening the partnership between Mozambique and Europe in the renewable energy sector. More than a forum, it was a demonstration of how structured cooperation, clear investment pipelines and private‑sector engagement can accelerate the energy transition.

Alongside the distinguished presence of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Mozambique, the event gathered over 200 participants from 12 EU Member States, along with Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. 70% of the audience was representing private companies, investors and financial institutions, that joined the Mozambican & European public institutions, and several business & trade associations in this two-day event. This balanced audience ensured high‑quality discussions and direct engagement between project promoters and potential financiers.

At the core of the discussions was the structured renewable energy project pipeline presented by Mozambique – covering opportunities in solar, hydro, mini‑grids and transmission. This was the first time such a consolidated portfolio was showcased in Europe, and it reflects the dedicated work of Mozambican institutions including MIREME, FUNAE, EDM, HCB, GMNK, APIEX and ARENE. Their efforts strengthen what is most critical for investors: visibility, predictability and confidence in project development and policy stability. I would like to highlight some flagship projects that Team Europe is honoured to support in Mozambique such as the National Control Centre, the rehabilitation of Hidroelectrica Cahora Bassa, and support for the transformational Mphanda Nkuwa project – all of which already benefit or will benefit directly from enhanced EU-Mozambique coordination.

From a European Union perspective, RENMOZ in Europe exemplifies how the Global Gateway/Team Europe approach can create tangible pathways for investment. This RENMOZ roadshow in Europe, is a novel and effective approach to engaging with the private sector, an initiative that the European Commission views with keen interest and will certainly consider for implementation in other regions.

Implemented by Team Europe, Global Gateway aims to mobilise capital, reduce risk, and strengthen regulatory and technical foundations for large‑scale infrastructure. By combining political engagement, policy dialogue, EU grants, concessional loans, guarantees and technical assistance, and engaging EU Development Finance Institutions and Export Credit Agencies, we are building an ecosystem in which public and private actors can move from interest to implementation, supported by instruments that reflect business realities.

The 130 targeted bilateral meetings held over the two days further illustrate the strong interest from European stakeholders and the tangible progress achieved towards building partnerships and advancing investment opportunities. This intensive matchmaking agenda – B2B, B2G and bilateral meetings – enabled practical discussions on investment models, project preparation, risk‑mitigation tools and financing structures. This is precisely where Team Europe’s instruments can support: helping projects move from early concept to bankability and financial close.

With a particular emphasis on renewable energy, we aim to capitalise on Mozambique's exceptional natural assets and its strategic position in Southern Africa. Our objective is to support Mozambique's Energy Transition Strategy, assist in establishing the country as a regional energy hub, and bolster efforts towards green industrialisation. Furthermore, we are committed to aiding Mozambique in achieving universal access to clean electricity and enhancing clean cooking solutions.

I would like to highlight the critical role of ALER and AMER, whose joint leadership ensured the success of RENMOZ in Europe. By convening national institutions, European partners, financiers and private‑sector actors, they demonstrated the value of platforms that connect knowledge, build cooperation and elevate regional visibility. In this, ALER is a key partner for Team Europe’s long‑term engagement in the Portuguese-speaking countries energy landscape.

RENMOZ in Europe also marks the beginning of the Road to RENMOZ 2026, which will culminate in the main business conference in Maputo from 9th to 12th June 2026. The conference will run back-to back with the second edition of the EU-Mozambique Global Gateway Forum in Maputo, on 9th and 10th June 2026. The momentum generated in Brussels sets a strong foundation for the next phase – one focused on expanding investment pipelines, advancing concrete deals and accelerating progress towards sustainable, inclusive and resilient energy systems.

The coming months will be decisive, and Team Europe stands ready to continue supporting Mozambique and its partners on this promising path.
