Dedicated to the 1st CPLP Energy and Climate Seminar, the first edition of “Energy and Climate in the CPLP” brings together different articles on climate finance mechanisms for accelerating the energy transition in CPLP Member States.

In Porto Novo, in the Santo Antão island, was implemented a desalination plant in 2021, with the support of Águas de Porto Novo, in a public-private partnership between the Government of Cape Verde, the Municipality of Porto Novo and Águas de Ponta Preta.

Climate change represents an opportunity to realign the development model, making it climate-resilient and based on low greenhouse gas emissions, while fully leveraging a regenerative economy. With this perspective, Cape Verde has designed and is implementing a new climate governance framework. This framework provides practical guidelines for institutionalizing mechanisms to ensure the effective implementation of climate action, including political decision-making, coordination, knowledge management, diplomacy, resource mobilization, communication, and transparency.

The Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Ulisses Correia e Silva, highlighted the signing of 30 cooperation agreements between Cape Verde and Portugal during the VII Bilateral Summit, which took place on 27th and 28th January in Lisbon. The event, which included closed-door ministerial meetings, culminated yesterday with the signing of protocols covering various areas of cooperation between the two countries.

Events

The II CPLP Energy Conference will take place on the 27th and 28th of May 2025, in Estoril Congress Center, Cascais, Portugal, and will be the stage for the dissemination of the latest developments and anchor projects for energy transitions in each CPLP country, with a view to making the most of endogenous resources and diversifying the energy matrix, to ensure universal, reliable and affordable access for all, while supporting socio-economic development.

The 4th CPLP Energy and Climate Seminar will take place on March 25, 2025, in São Tomé and Príncipe, and will mainly focus on the development of a Lusophone Roadmap for COP 30.
Training

The Sustainable Energy, Entrepreneurship and Startups Workshop had two-day duration and it was an online training program for entrepreneurs and startups in the area of sustainable energy.

The Women Sustainable Energy Program was held from February to July 2022 and had as its main objective the empowerment of women from São Tomé and Principe, Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau.
Interchange

ALER, in partnership with the Government of Cape Verde, will organize an Energy and Climate Trade Mission on October 29, in Praia.

Between 10 and 12 July, ALER hosted in Lisbon a delegation from the Municipality of Ribeira Grande de Santiago, Cape Verde, for an exchange action within the framework of the Climate and Energy Access Action Plan (SEACAP).
